Uh Oh, Are My Gums Running Away From Me? A Look at Gum Recession

Here in Riverside, we're all about enjoying life and flashing those beautiful smiles. But what happens when the very foundation of that smile – your gums – starts to show signs of trouble? It's a common concern, and one we take seriously at Dental Specialists of Riverside: gum recession.

You might not give your gums much thought, but they play a crucial role in supporting your teeth and overall oral health. When gums recede, they pull back, exposing more of the tooth and even the roots. This can lead to sensitivity, make your teeth look longer, and, if left untreated, even result in tooth loss. It is not just an aesthetic issue. We've seen firsthand how gum recession can impact a person's well-being, which is why we're dedicating this blog post to understanding this condition. So, let's dive into why gum recession happens, what it means for you, and, most importantly, what we can do to protect your smile.

What Causes My Gums to Recede?

It's a common question we hear in our office, and it's a good one! Understanding the "why" behind gum recession is the first step toward prevention and treatment. There isn't one single culprit; it's usually a combination of factors.

One of the biggest contributing factors is periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. This is an infection of the gums caused by plaque, that sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on our teeth. When plaque isn't removed properly through brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar, which is much more difficult to remove and can irritate the gums. Over time, this irritation can lead to inflammation, gum recession, and even bone loss.

But gum disease isn't the only player in this game. Aggressive brushing is another surprising cause. You might think you're doing your teeth a favor by scrubbing them hard, but too much pressure can actually wear away the gum tissue. Think of it like this: if you constantly scrubbed at a delicate piece of fabric, it would eventually start to fray, right? The same goes for your gums.

Genetics can also play a role. Some people are simply predisposed to having thinner gum tissue, which makes them more susceptible to recession. Hormonal changes, especially in women, can also affect gum health and contribute to recession during periods like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

Other factors that can contribute to gum recession include:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism): This puts excessive force on the teeth and gums.
  • Misaligned teeth: Crooked teeth can be harder to clean properly, leading to plaque buildup.
  • Oral piercings: Lip or tongue piercings can rub against the gums and cause irritation.
  • Tobacco use: Smoking and chewing tobacco significantly increase the risk of gum disease.
  • Certain health conditions: Diabetes, for instance, can impact blood flow, making it harder for the gums to heal.

How Do I Know if My Gums Are Receding?

It's not always obvious, especially in the early stages. That's why regular dental checkups are so crucial. During your exam, our experienced team at Dental Specialists of Riverside can spot the early signs of gum recession that you might miss.

However, there are some things you can be on the lookout for:

  • Tooth sensitivity: This is often one of the first signs. As the roots of your teeth become exposed, they become more sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks.
  • Teeth appearing longer: This is a telltale sign. If your teeth seem to be getting longer, it's likely because the gums are pulling back, exposing more of the tooth.
  • Notches or indentations near the gum line: You might be able to feel these with your tongue.
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite: This can indicate that the supporting bone is being affected.
  • Spaces between teeth: This can develop as gums recede and bone loss occurs.
  • Bad breath: This can be a symptom of advanced gum disease.

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, don't panic! But don't ignore them either. The sooner you address gum recession, the better the outcome.

What Can Be Done to Treat Receding Gums?

The good news is that there are effective treatment options available for gum recession, right here at Dental Specialists of Riverside. The best approach depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the recession.

For mild cases, we might recommend deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing. This procedure involves removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smoothing the root surfaces  to help the gums reattach to the teeth.  We might also recommend some adjustments to your oral hygiene routine, like switching to a softer toothbrush or using a special mouthwash.

In cases where the recession is more advanced or caused by significant bone loss, we may recommend gum grafting surgery. This involves taking tissue from another area of your mouth (usually the palate) or using a donor tissue and grafting it onto the receded area to cover the exposed roots. This helps to protect the roots from decay, reduce sensitivity, and improve the appearance of your smile.

Another option is the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves making a small hole in the gum tissue and using special instruments to gently loosen and reposition the existing gum tissue over the exposed roots. It's a great option for many patients because it doesn't require stitches or grafts.

Regardless of the specific treatment, our priority at Dental Specialists of Riverside is your comfort and well-being. We'll take the time to explain all your options, answer your questions, and develop a personalized treatment plan that meets your individual needs.
